February 23, 2018 – A number of search firms that specialize in the legal sector have grown their staffs over the past several months.
The latest: Executive search firm Lucas Group has continued to expand its legal contract recruitment practice by opening a new Mid-Atlantic contract legal division based in Baltimore.
It will be led by senior partner Karissa Hayko and serve the growing needs of U.S. corporations and law firms for temporary legal talent in the Washington, D.C. and surrounding region.
The new division provides law firms and corporate in-house legal departments with attorneys, paralegals, legal support and compliance professionals on a temporary contract, temporary-to-hire and long-term basis. The practice serves mid-tier to Fortune 500 companies ranging from boutique to global 100 law firms.
“Increasingly, law firms and companies are opting to staff their teams and departments with temporary legal support until they are certain there is a need for a permanent hire,” said Steven Lynch, general manager of legal at Lucas Group. “They also are able to work with the individual on a trial basis to review work product and measure fit.” It is a more efficient, immediate and cost-effective talent solution, he said. “Our new, specialized recruiters in our Baltimore branch have direct access to the nation’s largest legal talent network, bringing top performers directly to Mid-Atlantic companies.”
Ms. Hayko, who joined Lucas Group in November, has 15 years of experience in the legal industry, including a decade providing outside support to corporate legal departments and law firms. She was previously senior manager of business development for Deloitte Services in Washington, D.C., where she was responsible for identifying and developing relationships with both law firms and corporate legal departments for Deloitte’s advisory practice related to its technology, e-discovery, cybersecurity and information governance services.
“Karissa has serviced the legal industry for 15 years with more than 10 of those years providing support to corporate legal departments and law firms,” Mr. Lynch said. “With her deep understanding of the Mid-Atlantic market, she is uniquely suited to support organizations with their legal talent needs.”
Lucas Group works with mid-tier to Fortune 500 clients in consumer products, energy (oil, gas, chemicals, and alternatives), aerospace & defense, call center and customer services, global supply chain management, industrial products, food & beverage, and biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device services. In addition to serving the legal sector the firm’s practice groups includes accounting & finance, human resources, IT, manufacturing, legal, sales & marketing and military transition. It has more than 300 affiliate recruiters in offices throughout the U.S.

Lucas Group’s legal practice works with Am Law 100 and leading regional and local firms to find and place law associates and partners. Its legal recruiters also provide counsel regarding practice group recruiting, mergers and branch office openings. In addition to firm work, the practice places in-house counsel within legal departments of mid-tier to Fortune 500 corporations, fast-growth companies and financial institutions.

Recently, Lucas Group strengthened its legal practice with the addition of Carolyn Aberman as its managing partner for legal recruitment. “With two decades of combined experience as a practicing lawyer and successful legal recruiter, Carolyn Aberman has a deep understanding of Chicago’s legal marketplace,” said Mr. Lynch. “Ms. Aberman’s track record proves she will play an integral role in continuing to establish Lucas Group as the premier recruiting firm for attorneys in the greater Chicago region.”
Ms. Aberman practiced law for more than a decade in the greater Chicago area before transitioning to legal recruitment in 2011. Before joining Lucas Group, she served as legal recruiting director at the Partners Group (formerly known as Plante Moran Staffing), where she counseled and advised mid- to senior-level attorneys about conducting productive job searches, including assistance with resume drafting, business plan development and social media networking.
