Coulter Partners Finds Chief Commercial Officer for Nanoform

December 21, 2018 – Global executive search firm Coulter Partners has placed Christian Jones as chief commercial officer of Helsinki-based drug particle engineering and nanotechnology company Nanoform. Client partner Eskil Westh led the assignment.

The appointment comes at a pivotal time in Nanoform’s growth, having recently completed a EUR 7 million funding round for investment in its technology and talent hiring. The role of chief commercial officer will be fundamental for the initial 18-month strategy to increase international sales and globalize the particle engineering technology, and for the subsequent company growth beyond this.

The newly created role is imperative for developing a commercial strategy to catapult Nanoform’s novel nanonization technology into the global pharmaceutical marketplace, the search firm said. International commercialization is the next step for establishing Nanoform as a revolutionary technology provider for pharma and biotech companies. Its proprietary nanonization services can significantly reduce rates of clinical attrition through improved drug solubility and bioavailability.

Mr. Jones has international business development and commercial experience within both pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries, specifically in the particle engineering and drug delivery fields, said Coulter Partners. His extensive global networks will be used to connect drug developers with Nanoform’s technological solutions. He joins Nanoform from Johnson Matthey Plc, where he was commercial director for European API development and manufacturing, having previously held senior commercial roles at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Prosonix.

“I am delighted to welcome Christian to Nanoform and thank the Coulter Partners team for their outstanding work on our behalf in achieving this quality appointment,” said Edward Hæggström, Nanoform’s CEO. “Christian’s solid experience and understanding of the pharmaceutical markets, in combination with his knowledge in commercializing proprietary particle engineering technology, will be invaluable to developing Nanoform’s global business development strategy.”

Chief Commercial Officer Recruiting

The CCO is essentially responsible for the commercial strategy and the development of an organization. The role typically involves activities relating to marketing, sales, product development and customer service to drive business growth and market share. As a corporate officer, the CCO generally reports directly to the CEO and is charged with ensuring the integrated commercial success of an organization. The role typically combines technical knowledge of the relevant field with strong marketing and business development skills.

A CCO in large part takes ownership of the customer and the customer interface with the product or service offering, making sure that all functions of the organization are aligned to meet its strategic commercial objectives, said the search firm. This means that the role is closely linked to the organization’s strategic management function, in drafting, implementing and evaluating cross-functional decisions that enable an organization to achieve its long-term objectives.

A handful of companies have turned to executive search firms in recent months to find new chief commercial officers. Here is a sampling from the Hunt Scanlon Media archives:

BSG Team Ventures placed Don Kelly as chief commercial officer of Onyx CenterSource in Dallas. Managing director and co-founder Clark Waterfall led the assignment. As CCO, Mr. Kelly will be responsible for overseeing the company’s go-to-market strategy, identifying growth opportunities and ensuring the integrated commercial success of the organization.

Kincannon & Reed recruited Manoj Sahoo as chief commercial officer of Calyxt Inc. He will work closely as part of Calyxt’s executive team to build a commercial partnership network, execute a go-to-market plan for the company’s products and ensure Calyxt’s integrated commercial success moving forward.

Willig as chief commercial officer of Rosetta Genomics Ltd. In this newly created position, he is responsible for sales, marketing and market access for Rosetta Genomics’ entire portfolio of high-value diagnostic assays. Most recently, Mr. Willig served as senior vice president of sales for CardioDx Inc.
