Diversified Search Finds CFO for Catholic Charities USA

May 25, 2017 – Diversified Search has placed Sean P. Roddy as chief financial officer for Catholic Charities USA, one of the biggest charities in the country. Nalini Perkins, managing director of the recruiter’s non-profit practice, and Mark Mulvanerty, managing director of its financial officers practice, co-led the assignment.

Mr. Roddy was “strong technically,” said Ms. Perkins, but it was more than his experience that won him the job: He had also expressed interest in going beyond a corporate role and making a contribution to those in need.

“We have tracked Sean’s career for many years and knew that he was open to something with more of a calling at this point of his life,” said Ms. Perkins. “He was very intrigued when he learned about the opening as he was familiar with the good work of Catholic Charities USA and the mission resonated strongly with him.”

Catholic Charities USA, based in Alexandria, VA, was ranked last year by Forbes magazine as the ninth largest charity in the country. Its yearly revenues are nearly $3.9 billion, and it received $921 million in private donations. The organization supports a network of charities across the country, fighting poverty and providing disaster relief.

The Search

Diversified Search worked closely with president and CEO Sister Donna Markham, and her team on the assignment, said Ms. Perkins, who works out of Diversified’s Washington, D.C. office. Mr. Mulvanerty, for his part, is based at the search firm’s headquarters in Philadelphia.

Mr. Roddy is a senior financial executive with broad-based financial and business experience, with revenues ranging from start-ups to more than $1 billion. He has completed in excess of $250 million in equity financings and has served as a change agent leading initiatives in business expansion both domestically and internationally, M&A and divestitures, complex financings and operational improvements. He has extensive experience with technology focused businesses, working with company founders and board members to create and protect shareholder value.

Mr. Roddy has been a business partner to CEOs and a member of senior leadership for more than two decades, said Ms. Perkins. Most recently, he was a consultant for accounting and financial consulting firm Cordia Partners. Previously, he was chief operating officer for Proove Biosciences, which specializes in personalized medicine. He held the same role with accountants Watkins Meegan. Mr. Roddy has also taught graduate-level courses at Johns Hopkins University.

The recruiters started the search, which was national in scope, by reaching out to candidates in Washington, D.C., which is home territory for Catholic Charities USA and fertile ground for talent in the charitable sector. They then searched farther afield, building concentric circles, said Ms. Perkins. Five finalist candidates were presented within 30 days.

Ms. Perkins and Mr. Mulvanerty’s primary targets were not-for-profit financial leaders, Ms. Perkins said. The recruiters also paid close attention, however, to corporate financial leaders who showed an affinity for Catholic Charities USA’s mission and who were looking to shift into non-profit work.
