Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates Selected by Cal Maritime to Find Provost

March 5, 2020 – Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, a search firm focused on higher education, has been chosen by California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) to lead a national search to find a new provost and vice president of academic affairs. Managing partner Alberto Pimentel is leading the assignment along with partner Emy Peña.

Given the strategic growth, program development and innovation happening at Cal Maritime, the position has several unique responsibilities in addition to the fundamental role of provost, said Storbeck/Pimentel.

The provost is the chief academic officer and is responsible for promoting a rich intellectual and professional life, fostering cadet success, creating an active learning environment both in the classroom and beyond, developing new academic degree programs, and enhancing teaching, academic research, scholarship and service at Cal Maritime. This leader coordinates and sustains collaborative leadership in accomplishing the mission of Cal Maritime and the California State University System.

In addition, the provost oversees all aspects of academic affairs, and ensures effective and efficient high-quality services in several critical areas, including undergraduate education, graduate education, extended education, enrollment management, research, planning, resource allocation and assessment, said Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates.

This leader advances Cal Maritime’s commitment to its values and mission, including diversity and inclusion, the development of the whole person, develops current and future programming that prepares students for careers in maritime industries and beyond, policy and procedures, and community involvement both within and outside the university.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Academic credentials that would warrant appointment as full professor at Cal Maritime.
  • Senior administrative leadership experience as dean, senior director, associate vice president or higher of a substantial program.
  • Experience in institution-wide strategic planning, including strategic enrollment management.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing new, successful programs.
  • Experience leading and managing change in, and growth of, an organization.
  • Experience with regional accreditation.
  • Track record of data-driven decision making.
  • Experience managing budgets and personnel matters including retention, tenure, and promotion evaluations.
  • Track record of supporting curricular and co-curricular initiatives.
  • Evidence of supporting and increasing diversity (broadly defined) at the student and faculty levels.

Mr. Pimentel co-founded Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates along with Shelly Weiss Storbeck in 2007 and has led and managed hundreds of search assignments for a variety of public and private universities and colleges, non-profit organizations and governmental agencies over the past 20 years. He has recruited candidates for both academic and administrative positions for university systems as well as individual campuses. His experience includes conducting searches for chancellors, presidents, provosts, vice presidents, academic deans, executive directors and managers across all functional areas. He is also widely known for his work across multiple campuses in the University of California and California State systems.

Ms. Storbeck is managing partner of the East Coast practice. She has one of the most widely recognized names in higher education search, having recruited senior leaders for some of America’s most prestigious colleges and universities. Most recently, she conducted president searches for the University of Pittsburgh, University of Wisconsin, Bates, Denison, Haverford and Swarthmore colleges. Based in the Los Angeles office of Storbeck/Pimentel, Ms. Peña is a partner in the firm’s higher education practice and has more than 10 years of executive search experience. Having a “hands-on” orientation, she is responsible for candidate identification and recruitment, interview coordination, candidate and client management, and candidate referencing. Ms. Peña has led and assisted with searches in all academic and administrative areas, including president/chancellor/CEO, provost, vice president (of all functional areas), and dean searches for universities large and small, public and private. She has significant experience working with the California State University System and has led searches for the vast majority of its 23 campuses as well as the system office.
