Unleashing Talent as a Results AcceleratorHugh MacArthur Head of Global Private Equity – Bain & Company
For private equity firms, nothing impacts an investment return more than talent. But there is a fundamental shift in thinking underway around how to unleash higher levels of leadership performance to boost results. It has required a hard look at value creation and how top talent enriches returns. In this opening keynote presentation, Bain & Company partner Hugh MacArthur examines how companies can more closely align their talent management programs to investment returns. Unleashing talent as a results accelerator, he argues, is a golden lever to value creation.
Optimizing Performance in a PE WorldIntroduction by: Andrew Thompson Managing Partner and Founder – Notch Partners Mindy Mackenzie Chief Performance Officer – The Carlyle Group
In the demanding environment of private equity, managing career aspirations with performance can oftentimes be daunting. In the following presentation, Mindy Mackenzie, chief performance officer at one of the world’s largest PE firms, discusses the importance of maximizing organizational, operational and leadership effectiveness. Driven primarily through leveraging expertise in change management, strategy, culture and engagement, Ms. Mackenzie examines the interplay of those four elements that is driving employee performance and its positive impact both within The Carlyle Group itself and its portfolio companies.
Building D&I Talent Pipelines for Investment Advantage
While many industries are making continual strides in their diversity and inclusion hiring efforts, private equity is lagging. Today, just 18 percent of all PE professionals are female, with just 10 percent serving in senior-level roles. For professionals of color and those identified as LGBTQ, the metrics are even more discouraging. In this special panel discussion, experts from private equity and executive search examine how diversity of experience, culture, race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation can provide distinct perspectives that engender a rich workplace and stimulate better investment decisions.

Connecting Talent to Value – The Rapid Redeployment of Human CapitalSandy Ogg Founder – CEO.works Sumeet Salwan Co-Founder – CEO.works
In PE, we self-create a disruption to produce new value in the companies where we invest. Legacy talent management tools struggle to keep pace in an environment where change is rapid and time is short. In order to produce 2.5-3x type returns, we need a bold and focused value agenda. We also need the right talent in the most critical places to deliver the expected value in time. In this talk, Sandy Ogg and Sumeet Salwan of CEOworks, joined by a portfolio company CEO, will discuss the Connecting Talent to Value approach, how its changed the work and its impact on performance.
CUTTING THROUGH THE LEADERSHIP CONFIDENCE CRISISJeff Warren Managing Director, Private Equity Practice – Russell Reynolds Associates Jenna Fisher Managing Director, Corporate Officers Practice – Russell Reynolds Associates
Profound competitive advantages lie ahead for any organization that can predict the performance of their top leaders. But in today’s complex and volatile environment, leadership qualities are ever-changing – and that often means the traits that propel leaders into the C-suite can be different from and in sharp contrast to what predicts their success. To help sort it all out, search & leadership advisory experts Jeff Warren and Jenna Fisher – along with a panel of C-suite portfolio company leaders – will present proprietary results from the latest Russell Reynolds Associates’ Leadership Span™ assessment of C-suite portfolio company leaders. They will then examine the competing competencies required to navigate the frenetic pace, fluid environment and transformational demands of a PE-backed portfolio company.

Optimizing Investment Returns on Security ChiefsMatt Comyns Managing Partner, Cybersecurity Practice – Caldwell Joel de la Garza Operating Partner – Andreessen Horowitz
When private equity and portfolio leaders look at enterprise risk, they identify both vulnerabilities to their financial well-being and opportunities in the market. Their goal is to understand, categorize, and quantify risk tolerance. Exposure to cybersecurity threats is a snowballing part of that enterprise risk management equation – and it is posing big challenges for chief information security officers. CISOs are the costliest of hires and they take the longest to find. But they now sit at the nexus of risk and returns and their value cannot be overstated or underestimated. In this dual presentation, cybersecurity recruiting specialist Matt Comyns will be joined by Joel de la Garza, an operating partner at Andreessen Horowitz, to examine the role’s evolution. They will then advance PE strategies to help your portfolio not only survive, but optimize, returns on security chiefs.
