In NYSE Interview, HelloSky CEO Alex Bates Explains the ‘Moneyball’ Approach to Executive Search

Senior-level hiring is becoming increasingly complex as organizations seek greater precision around leadership decisions and the risks that come with getting them wrong. In a recent NYSE Live interview, HelloSky CEO Alex Bates discussed how AI can help search firms improve candidate targeting while preserving the judgment and intuition experienced recruiters bring to the process. He also explored why better data, stronger human oversight, and more effective use of technology are becoming increasingly important in executive recruiting.

October 14, 2026 – Artificial intelligence is reshaping how executive search firms identify and evaluate leadership talent, but the technology alone is not replacing the judgment that experienced recruiters bring to senior-level hiring. Instead, the opportunity increasingly lies in combining better data and targeting with the intuition, pattern recognition, and relationship skills that have long defined successful executive search.

That was a central theme in a recent NYSE Live interview with Alex Bates, CEO of HelloSky. HelloSky positions itself as a next-generation talent intelligence platform for executive search, using data and technology to help organizations identify leadership talent with greater precision.

“We launched HelloSky to power the high-stakes world of executive search — the leaders who power the world’s leading companies, who come ring the bell here at the New York Stock Exchange,” Mr. Bates said. “We launched it because it’s an incredibly important problem, and a problem that’s underserved.”

Mr. Bates explained that his interest in the intersection of people and artificial intelligence predates HelloSky. His previous AI company, Mtell, was acquired by a public company, an experience that reinforced his view that the human side of AI-enabled decision-making is often overlooked.

“I felt that the human role working with AI was really underappreciated,” he said. “I wrote a book on that topic, and HelloSky is the next chapter in that evolution.”

Improving the Targeting

One of the biggest opportunities for technology in executive search, according to Mr. Bates, is not necessarily replacing the recruiter’s ability to assess a candidate, but helping firms identify the right people to evaluate in the first place.

“The main thing is, I’ve met some of the world’s elite recruiters, and they have this Sherlock Holmes ability to just read someone — their psychology, their motivation, their competencies,” he said. “The problem is they have a targeting problem. They interview a lot of the wrong people, so they end up going back to the Rolodex of people they know, because they have that information.”

HelloSky Brings Its Graph of People, Investors, and Companies Into Claude and ChatGPT

Artificial intelligence is moving deeper into executive search as firms look for faster ways to uncover leadership talent, market relationships, and career patterns. HelloSky is extending that shift by bringing its human capital intelligence graph directly into Claude and ChatGPT through a new Model Context Protocol integration. The move gives recruiters another way to combine AI-driven reasoning with structured people and company data inside the tools they already use.

That is where Mr. Bates sees technology complementing rather than competing with the executive search consultant. “What we’ve found is that coupling our graph — to give them the right targets — with that amazing reading ability works,” he explained. “We’ve had amazing results with a lot of the top 20 executive search, venture capital, and private equity firms.”

The approach reflects a broader shift across executive recruiting toward using technology to narrow and strengthen candidate pools before consultants apply their own assessment skills and market knowledge. “What we’re seeing in executive hiring is an old-school approach,” Mr. Bates said. “There’s a huge opportunity with AI now to use newer approaches to fill roles faster and better.”

The stakes are particularly high at the executive level, where an unsuccessful appointment can affect strategy and performance well beyond the cost of replacing one individual.

“The cost of a misfire on executive hiring can literally be catastrophic — multi-year loss of go-to-market timeframes,” Mr. Bates said. “So we’re really helping accelerate that and improve retention.”

Keeping Humans in the Loop

As AI tools become more powerful, Mr. Bates believes the next challenge will be determining how organizations manage the increasing volume of information those systems generate. “It’s been wild,” he said. “I think AI is transformative. Ironically, everyone’s working more hours, and yet it’s giving us this tidal wave of useful information that humans still need to digest and sift through.”

For executive search firms, that creates a different kind of problem. Access to more information does not necessarily make a leadership decision easier unless firms can identify which information is important and connect it to experienced human judgment.

“The amazing thing is it’s giving us all this extra information — and the next chapter is going to be how we give the right information and have human judgment go into that loop,” Mr. Bates explained.

That human element remains central to HelloSky’s approach, particularly because executive hiring decisions are rarely made with complete information. “We’re very big on human-in-the-loop,” Mr. Bates said. “My thesis is that human gifts are underappreciated and underrepresented in the mainstream.”

“Humans have this conviction, this intuition about decision-making under uncertainty — and we live in an uncertain world,” he added. “You never step in the same river twice. So that’s hugely important to how our technology works with these operators.”

Growing Demand for Executive Talent Intelligence

Mr. Bates also pointed to an increase in executive hiring activity as one factor driving demand for HelloSky’s platform. “We’re seeing a surge in demand because there’s been an uptick in executive hiring,” he said.

HelloSky has also expanded access to its technology through integrations with generative AI platforms. Mr. Bates said the company has launched a plugin for ChatGPT and Claude intended to make its talent-targeting capabilities more accessible.

“It’s kind of democratizing access — it’s like having your own Palantir in your back pocket: a targeting engine for ‘who are the top 50 people in the world you need to talk to’ for your application,” he said. “We’re pretty excited about the next chapter.”

Ultimately, Mr. Bates sees executive talent as an increasingly important component of company performance and value creation. “The elite firms we work with are placing a lot of the candidates who are here ringing the bell, and it’s phenomenal to see,” he said during the NYSE interview. “Really, it’s talent that’s powering all these leading companies, and we look forward to helping continue that path.”
