Sucherman Group Expands Search Staff

June 18, 2019 – New York-based Sucherman Group has expanded its sports, digital and international advisory practices with the additions of Cuyler Holmquist and Aaron Henderson as executive directors.

Mr. Holmquist was enlisted to help with the firm’s business development and execution efforts. Most recently, he ran the U.S. sports practice for search firm Odgers Berndtson. Having started working for Odgers in London, he was relocated to the firm’s New York office in 2017, after completing his MBA in International Sport Management at Coventry University. Prior to that, Mr. Holmquist worked in various business development roles for Citrix across the U.S. He has experience winning and executing searches for top-tier sports properties in the U.S. and Europe and will focus on the professional sports market in North America. He will be based in the New York office.

Mr. Henderson joins Sucherman following his recent graduation from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles. He is the founder of the Koterie, an agency representing professional athletes, including Tarell Basham of the New York Jets. He is the youngest recipient of an NFLPA agent’s license while also holding the NBPA agent certification. Mr. Henderson will focus on developing business for us within collegiate athletics and professional sports. He will be based in Los Angeles.

Newly Launched Practice

Earlier this year, Sucherman officially launched its sports entertainment and international practices with the additions of Simon Pollock as managing director, international, based in London, and Charles Gould as managing director, sports.

Mr. Pollock leads the firm’s international practice, providing worldwide executive search and consulting services to U.S.-based companies while also supporting international companies expanding in the U.S. Mr. Pollock has more than 30 years of media and entertainment industry experience, having held senior international roles at Disney, Sony and A&E Networks. Previously, he was the London-based head of practice, media and entertainment for Heidrick & Struggles.

Mr. Gould leads Sucherman’s sports entertainment practice, which is charged with delivering on the growing demand from this rapidly-changing sector of the entertainment business. Building on the firm’s expertise with TV, film and digital companies, Mr. Gould and his team help sports entertainment brands with talent recruitment and organizational design that best position them to navigate the issues and opportunities presented by new technologies and rapidly shifting consumer behavior. Mr. Gould was most recently managing director of Ascendent Executive Search, part of Stephen Ross’ RSE Ventures (which includes the Miami Dolphins and ICC).

Sports and Entertainment Expansion Elevating Search Business

Over the last 25 years, the sports sector has grown into a formidable global industry. Historically, professional sports teams operated on a relatively modest level, with league officials, team owners, managers, and coaches surrounding themselves with people they knew and trusted from their own small worlds. College sports teams relied on in-house search committees and word-of-mouth recommendations. That has all changed.

Teams with huge followings like the Dallas Cowboys, Real Madrid and Manchester United have seen their valuations soar into the billions of dollars. That’s attracted search firms – big time. Seasoned recruiters now provide strategic planning advice, in addition to talent identification services, with the capability of applying their findings to speed along the process in the hunt for talent. Here’s some further reading from Hunt Scanlon Media.

Sucherman’s new practice recently welcomed new clients such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Real Madrid, Turner Sports, the San Francisco Giants and the Baltimore Orioles, building upon past work with the NFL, WWE, USTA, the New York Mets, SNY, the New York Jets, NBC Sports and NYC Football Group.

“For more than 30 years, Sucherman Group has helped companies make the right moves with the right strategy, the right organizational structure and the right executives,” said Stuart F. Sucherman, founder and chairman of Sucherman Group. “With Simon and Charles on our team, we are now positioned to fully extend that top notch advice and service to the sports industry and companies around the world.”

With offices in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Sucherman Group is a management consulting and executive search firm that specializes in working with a wide range of media and entertainment companies. Its clients include cable and broadcast television networks, motion picture and television studios, broadcast stations and station groups, online media organizations, publishers, consumer-facing technology companies and social media platforms.
