Resonate Search Names Orchestra President As Non-Profit Practice Leader
May 13, 2016 – Toronto-based executive search firm Resonate Search Group has added Charles Owens as an executive search consultant and head of the firm’s non-profit search practice. He will be based in Rochester, NY. His practice focuses on the non-profit performing arts sector, including symphony orchestras; opera, ballet and theatre companies; performing arts centers and other presenting venues.
Mr. Owens handles recruiting assignments ranging from presidents, CEOs, and executive directors, to vice presidents and directors of development, marketing and public relations, finance and administration, education and community engagement, artistic administration, and general management.
Mr. Owens has more than 30 years’ experience as a leader in the non-profit arts industry — classical music, professional theatre, and fine arts. Previously, he was president and chief executive officer of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Prior to that, he served as executive director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. He also held various roles with the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, the Cleveland Play House, and the Cleveland Orchestra.

“This is a great opportunity to utilize my 30-plus years of experience in the non-profit cultural sector to help our clients find the talent they need to grow their organizations,” said Mr. Owens. “As a former arts executive who has hired dozens of people into leadership positions, I have an advantage over many other recruiters because I understand – from the inside out – how my clients’ business operates and what qualities are necessary for non-profit leaders to be successful.”
So, what led him to the executive search industry? “After three decades in the non-profit arts and cultural sector, I expected to continue on that path for the balance of my career,” he said. “However, one day a couple of months ago – within 24 hours of attending an advanced LinkedIn training course and updating my profile – I received a call from Mark Cohan, managing partner of Resonate Search Group. He was looking to expand his boutique search and recruitment firm into the non-profit sector and he spotted my upgraded LinkedIn profile.”
