McDermott + Bull Recruits CEO for Cocoon Inc.

June 19, 2024 – Irvine, CA-based search firm McDermott + Bull has recruited James R. Callan as president and CEO of Cocoon Inc., a middle-market leader in innovative corrosion-prevention solutions. This executive search was led by McDermott + Bull partner Jared Moriarty and senior executive recruiter Alyssa Camire. According to Leo Crotty, Cocoon founder and chairman of the board, the company was impressed with Mr. Callan’s customer-centric approach and his success building world-class teams and can-do cultures. “Cocoon is poised to significantly expand its capabilities to meet the DoD’s ever-increasing need for managing corrosion,” he said. “James’s qualifications, leadership skills, and impressive record of generating and managing growth make him a perfect fit for leading Cocoon into this exciting next chapter.”

A respected leader throughout the industrial technology space, Mr. Callan brings to Cocoon a demonstrated track record of leading teams and companies through growth transformations – including executive positions at STC Materials Solutions, Consolidated Aerospace Manufacturing, A.M. Castle & Company, and The Timken Company. Over his 30-year career with multiple companies he has executed on a wide range of leadership mandates, from clear-sighted strategic planning and spearheading operational transformations to integrating add-on acquisitions for full value realization, both organic and inorganic. Mr. Callan most recently served as CEO of Superior Technical Ceramics, where he effectively scaled the company and led it through a successful sale.

Mr. Callan has been on the board of the Aerospace Industries Association, American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico City, and American Chamber of Commerce of Singapore, as well as serving on the Government Contracts Council for the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity.

In his new role with Cocoon, Mr. Callan will lead the company’s comprehensive strategy to enhance growth and profitability, fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence. With a focus on expanding market share and enhancing product offerings, his expertise will be pivotal in maintaining Cocoon’s leading position in providing corrosion prevention solutions to the United States military.

Mr. Callan’s appointment marks another milestone for Cocoon. Founded nearly 50 years ago, the company has long been known for its corrosion-prevention expertise, its innovative products, and its inventive approach to problem solving. Cocoon does business globally with all branches of the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Foreign Military allies. The company provides products and services that protect military assets from the elements and reduce corrosion for the purpose of increasing readiness, decreasing costs, and extending asset lifecycles.

Mr. Moriarty serves as a partner at McDermott + Bull and is part of the firm’s aviation, aerospace, + defense practice, based in Irvine, CA. His team works with private equity firms, corporate clients, and private businesses focused in aerospace + defense, industrial manufacturing, and technology. Before joining McDermott + Bull, Mr. Moriarty worked as an executive recruiter for Unified Technical Inc., placing executives for their clients in the finance, accounting, IT, and engineering functions. He is also a licensed private pilot and his aviation experience has proven invaluable in his work with many of the firm’s aviation and aerospace clients.

Ms. Camire serves as a senior executive recruiter for McDermott + Bull, where she focuses specifically on the aerospace + defense practice. Her responsibilities include candidate research and recruiting; pipeline management and candidate flow; as well as performance feedback.

Prior to McDermott + Bull, Ms. Camire served as a senior staffing consultant for Beacon Hill Staffing Group’s finance and accounting department.

McDermott + Bull recently assisted in the recruitment of Brett Hamilton as chief credit officer of First Northern Bank in Dixon, NY. This search was led by McDermott + Bull president Brandon Biegenzahn, managing director Courtney Dorrel, and executive recruiter Rachel Camonayan. “Brett’s leadership and financial acumen should be instrumental in guiding our credit culture and supporting our strategic plan and helping us achieve our annual performance metrics,” said Jeremiah Smith, president and CEO of First Northern Bank. “His extensive experience combined with the bank’s already established sound lending practices should position Brett as a key driver of the bank’s continued growth throughout the region and surrounding communities we proudly serve.”

With more than 25 years of experience in the banking industry, Mr. Hamilton brings a vast background and expertise in credit risk strategies, portfolio management, and regulatory relations. As the chief credit officer, he will oversee the quality and diversity of the credit portfolio, and have responsibility for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and optimizing risk management practices at the bank. Mr. Hamilton most recently served as the senior vice president and senior credit administrator at Tri-Counties Bank where he led a team of credit analysts, commercial underwriters, and regional credit administrators.
