Leverage AI in Your Job Search: When to Use It and When Not To

August 3, 2026 – Artificial intelligence has been changing the way people search for jobs. From optimizing resumes to preparing for interviews, AI has become a valuable resource for candidates looking to streamline the process. The key is knowing how to use it effectively, according to a recent report from New York City headquartered executive search firm Solomon Page.

“AI can help you work more efficiently, but it should never replace the qualities that make you unique,” the report said. “Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for candidates with authentic experiences, thoughtful perspectives, and genuine enthusiasm. AI is most effective when used as a tool to support your search, not speak for you.”

Solomon Page offers a look at the five best practices for leveraging AI wisely throughout your job search.

1. Use AI to Strengthen Your Resume, Not Write It for You.

Hiring managers can spot AI-written resumes, the Solomon Page report explained. “AI can be a great starting point for identifying keywords, skills, and qualifications commonly found in job descriptions,” it said. “It can also help improve formatting and organization. However, your resume should always reflect your own experience, accomplishments, and career progression. Hiring managers often review hundreds of resumes and can recognize when content feels overly generic or lacks authenticity. The strongest resumes clearly communicate your unique value while remaining tailored to the position you’re pursuing.”

2. Let Your Voice Stay Authentic.

Solomon Page also said that your cover letter is one of the few opportunities you have to tell your story beyond your resume. “AI can help organize your thoughts, improve grammar, or create a strong structure, but it shouldn’t replace your voice,” the report explained. “Your motivations, career goals, and personal experiences are what make your application memorable. A personalized cover letter demonstrates genuine interest in both the role and the organization.”

3. Apply With Intention.

In addition, the report noted that AI makes it easier than ever to submit applications quickly, but more applications don’t necessarily lead to better results. “Instead of applying to every available position, focus on roles that genuinely align with your experience, skills, and long-term career goals,” Solomon Page said. “Taking the time to tailor your resume and application materials for each opportunity often leads to stronger outcomes than submitting dozens of identical applications. A thoughtful, targeted job search is typically far more effective than a high-volume approach.”

Where AI Belongs in Executive Search—and Where It Doesn’t

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the executive search profession, enabling firms to streamline operations while prompting new questions about the role of technology in leadership hiring. SpenglerFox examines how AI can improve productivity and search workflows while emphasizing that human judgment remains essential in evaluating executive talent. The report says that the future of executive search lies in combining the efficiencies of AI with the experience, intuition, and relationship-driven expertise that underpin successful leadership appointments.

4. Prepare With AI. Show Up as Yourself.

Practicing for interviews is another area where AI can provide real value, according to the Solomon Page report. “It can help generate common interview questions, suggest ways to improve your responses, and identify topics you may want to prepare for,” it said. “What AI cannot replicate is your personality, judgment, confidence, and ability to build rapport. During an interview, hiring managers are evaluating much more than your answers. They’re looking for communication skills, authenticity, enthusiasm, and cultural fit.”

5. Your Story Is What Sets You Apart.

Solomon Page said that every candidate brings a unique combination of experiences, accomplishments, and career aspirations to the hiring process. “Those qualities cannot be generated by AI. While AI can support your preparation, your career journey should always remain your own,” the report shared. “Sharing authentic examples of challenges you’ve overcome, successes you’ve achieved, and goals you’re working toward helps employers understand what makes you different from every other applicant. At the end of the day, your experiences are your greatest competitive advantage.”

AI Should Support Your Job Search, Not Define It

Artificial intelligence is transforming the hiring landscape, and learning how to use it effectively is becoming an important skill for today’s job seekers, the Solomon Page report concluded. “The most successful candidates leverage AI to improve efficiency while ensuring every application, conversation, and interview reflects who they truly are,” the report said. “When used thoughtfully, AI can help you become a more prepared, organized, and confident candidate. Just remember that technology may open the door, but your skills, experiences, and authenticity are what ultimately leave a lasting impression.”
