Large Language Models in PE: Strengths & Limitations

Join Hunt Scanlon Media tomorrow for an intriguing webinar on the impact of generative AI in the private equity sector. The focus will delve into how large language models are optimizing data collection and analysis, enhancing portfolio ops, and streamlining compliance for private equity firms. Here is a look into what will be discussed.

December 13, 2023 – Generative AI is making it easier than ever to turn unstructured data like blog posts, customer reviews, and resumes into structured data. “Think well formatted excel files, it can do this quickly, cheaply, and at scale,” says Josh Gardner, chief technology officer at AiFlow, a specialized CRM tool designed for private equity firms. “This is opening up entirely new avenues for data analysis.”

AI is making the storage and retrieval of data easier than ever through emerging technologies like vector databases and embeddings,” said Nick Manske, co-founder and CEO of AiFlow. “These two technologies allow us to search by concepts rather than by keywords. For example, if you search for CTO a vector database also gives you results for VP of engineering and director of IT because they are conceptually related to CTO.”

Fine-tuning takes a general model and makes it an expert in your specific task or domain,” Mr. Manske said. “As a concrete example, there are studies showing that senior recruiters can write job descriptions that get a 50 percent conversion rate versus standard ChatGPT which writes job descriptions with only a 10 percent conversion rate. Fine tune the model using examples from expert recruiters and suddenly ChatGPT also gets a 50 percent conversion rate. We’re seeing the same pattern cropping up in due diligence and investment memo writing in PE.”

AI makes it easier than ever to get troves of information on companies by turning unstructured data into structured data, according to Mr. Gardner. “This data allows deal teams to find and compare the very best deals using hard data,” he said. “Similarly it enables portfolio ops teams to know much more about their portcos and their competitors than ever before. Beyond that, it enables portcos to better utilize the firm’s networks to benefit their portcos. Gen AI allows firms to keep their CRMs extremely searchable and well-tagged giving them an edge in making the intros that portcos need.”

AiFlow provides best in industry CRM data augmentation and search tools for high touch professions like PE and executive search. “The system integrates directly into Salesforce and other major CRM/ATS providers to keep your contact data fresh and up to date using all available data sources online,” Mr. Manske said. “If someone switches jobs, your CRM will reflect it effortlessly. Also our system automatically tags your data and makes it possible to search by concepts like sales enablement rather than by specific keywords like Salesforce.”
