IES Consulting Leading Chief Legal Officer Search for Episcopal Church
February 10, 2017 – Executive search firm IES Consulting has been retained by The Episcopal Church (TEC) in New York City to lead its search for a chief legal officer. Dr. George Conway, IES Consulting president, is leading the assignment. The position will function as the organization’s general counsel and report to its chair.
The church’s chief legal officer will be responsible for assuring the reliable and timely provision of high quality legal advice and services to the presiding bishop, the president of the house of deputies, the executive office of the general convention, the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS) and its executive council.
The primary objective of the leader occupying this position is to protect the integrity of TEC and responsibly manage its legal risks. The chief legal officer will be ultimately responsible for the supervision of all legal matters in which TEC shall be a party, and for keeping clients informed about any legal matters that come before it.

The Episcopal Church seeks a lawyer of high integrity as shown by consistent exemplary conduct in law practice, including unquestioned candor towards tribunals and the fair treatment of opponents, clients, other parties in transactions and litigation, as well as towards colleagues and staff.
The incoming executive must be a member of or have the ability to become a member of the New York bar within 18 months of hire. Experience in representing non-profit organizations and 10 years of working within a legal practice are also highly desirable.
