HealthSearch Partners Recruits New CEO for Maury Regional Health

January 24, 2022 – HealthSearch Partners recently placed Davin Turner as the next chief executive officer of Maury Regional Health, a three-hospital health system located in Columbia, TN. This project was managed by senior principal and co-founder Barry Cesafsky with the assistance of chief operating officer Laura Conley. Together they worked closely with the eight-member Maury board of trustees, who operated as a search committee. Dr. Turner will assume the role on March 20.

Despite the formidable challenge due to the coronavirus pandemic, the HealthSearch Partners consultants met mask-to-mask with the search committee to begin the project soon after Labor Day. Travel restrictions and the need for social distancing hampered much of the usual ability to meet and gather freely. Many meetings and interviews were conducted by telephone or via Zoom. In some ways, the use of Zoom meetings helped expedite aspects of the search. “I believe the search we did was faster and more efficient because it was easier to find calendar time for a quick hourlong Zoom meeting here or there, while a face-to-face gathering would have taken a half a day or more, including travel,” said Mr. Cesafsky. The board search committee reached unanimous consensus and offered the CEO position to Dr. Turner just before Christmas.

Dr. Turner has more than 30 years of healthcare experience, most recently serving as president and chief medical officer at Mosaic Life Care Medical Center St. Joseph, a 352-bed tertiary hospital in St. Joseph, MO. He has been with Mosaic Life Care since 1996. During that time, Dr. Turner also served as chief medical officer and president of Mosaic Life Care Clinic, a multi-specialty practice consisting of more than 200 physicians and 100 advanced practice providers at 50 locations in three states.

During his tenure with Mosaic, he led the recent development of a $1.2 billion satellite medical school with the University of Kansas. He also negotiated to have Mosaic become the only health system in Missouri that is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a select group of independent health systems that are granted special access to Mayo Clinic’s knowledge and medical expertise.

A Fast-Growing Region

At Maury Regional Health, Dr. Turner will lead the organization as it continues to expand and thrive in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. The flagship hospital Maury Medical Center achieved Magnet designation in 2020; it also integrated the Baldrige framework to improve quality and operations.

“Dr. Turner brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position as both a physician and healthcare administrator, having expanded services and provider clinics at Mosaic Life Care while increasing market share and achieving national recognitions for quality and safety,” said Maury Regional Health board chairman Houston Parks.

Dr. Turner received his medical degree from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Tulsa, OK. He trained at the University of Massachusetts – Fitchburg Family Practice and Brighton Medical Center in Maine. He is board certified in family practice. In addition, Dr. Turner completed his master’s degree in healthcare management from the University of Texas in Dallas.

Serving Healthcare Organizations

Based in Dallas, TX, HealthSearch Partners was formed in 2018 by the joining together of Dallas-based firms FaithSearch Partners and Southerland Partners and Chicago-based CES Partners. Together, the three firms have combined experience of over 3,100 managed searches including more than 500 CEO searches and represent more than 130 years of search experience. The firm specializes in identifying and placing transformational, mission-minded CEOs and senior leaders in healthcare systems.

How COVID-19 is Transforming Healthcare Recruitment
Last year, the Association of American Medical Colleges predicted the U.S. would see a shortfall of up to 122,000 physicians by 2032. Now, lost revenue due to the pandemic has caused many hospitals to furlough employees and slowed, or completely delayed, recruitment efforts, according to new report by Jordan Search Consultants (JSC). The end result: unprecedented demand for providers unlike what hospitals have ever dealt with before, the firm says.

Mr. Cesafsky has over three decades of retained executive search experience, conducting countless CEO searches for healthcare provider organizations. He serves on the firm’s board of directors and is a life fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has been a partner in two major executive search firms, and he founded CES Partners in 2001.

Ms. Conley spent the first half of her career with some of the leading academic medical centers and pediatric hospitals in the country focusing on quality improvement, operations, and strategic planning. She is skilled at partnering and consulting with boards of directors, chief executive officers, and senior executives on executive recruitment and retention, succession planning, and organizational and leadership development. Ms. Conley also has specific experience with CEO searches.
