October 7, 2020 – The Bowdoin Group, a Boston-based executive recruitment firm, has expanded its core team with two new strategic hires, including the expansion of its research team and finance department in the last quarter.
Tracie-Jo (TJ) Crowthers joins the firm as a consultant, bringing with her several years of experience leading client engagements and managing candidates through the recruitment process. She will be responsible for developing and building relationships with clients and candidates across the firm’s healthcare and technology verticals, managing them through the entire recruitment process.
Prior to joining The Bowdoin Group, Ms. Crowthers served as an executive search consultant at Slone Partners, specializing in life sciences. She has also worked as a senior recruiter at life sciences-focused recruiting firm Scientific Search.
Christine Lipowski has also joined the firm as a consultant bringing significant expertise in executive search with several years of market research, search strategy, and candidate engagement experience. At Bowdoin Group, she will also be responsible for client and candidate management, partnering with them through the full recruitment process.
Ms. Lipowski most recently served as a manager and head of research at Page Executive, the division of PageGroup focused on executive and C-level searches. While there, she worked with a lead consultant to develop their executive search business from scratch, building out a research team and infrastructure to support the business. Prior to that role, she started her recruitment career as a consultant, specializing in candidate management and recruitment of HR professionals.
“We are thrilled to continue to grow The Bowdoin Group’s delivery arm with search professionals like TJ and Christine,” said Kara Barr, vice president of delivery at The Bowdoin Group. “They have incredible foundational and domain-relevant search experience and highlight our continued commitment to deliver exceptional work for our clients and candidates alike.”
In addition to these two strategic hires, The Bowdoin Group added three new associates earlier this summer, including Amber Graves, Marcus Witherspoon and Gabrielle Kontra, and a new staff accountant, Jessica Wright, to provide additional support to the firm’s finance team.
Supporting Strong Growth
“We are fortunate to bring all of these new team members onboard at such a unique time in the world as we continue to support strong growth at The Bowdoin Group,” said Dave Melville, founder and CEO. “Each individual is a great addition to the team and brings a perspective and set of skills that will help us continue our expansion across the life sciences, healthcare, and technology sectors.”
Founded in 1994, The Bowdoin Group specializes in leadership and strategic roles for a wide range of companies, from small firms building out their executive team to large firms sourcing talent for rapid market expansion. With deep expertise in biopharma, digital health, fintech and financial services, and software, the firm specializes in the Greater Boston area with the ability to source talent and service companies globally.
Filling Top Roles During a Pandemic
The Bowdoin Group recently placed the new chief executive officer for Alpha II, which provides software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions for healthcare professionals, clearinghouses and government entities. Todd Doze joins the Tallahassee-based company from TransUnion, where he was vice president of reimbursement solutions. The search was spearheaded by Josh Gottlieb, managing director, digital health, and Sean Walker, partner.
Why Smart CEOs are Hiring Executives During COVID-19
Over the past six months, The Bowdoin Group has completed several executive searches with venture- and private equity-backed companies. Although the majority of the firm’s clients and their investors expressed some degree of concern kicking off the assignments, according to the firm’s Sean Walker, “as we moved through each successful placement, it became clear that COVID-19 has not necessarily changed executive search fundamentally – it has only moved the processes and tools we use to build trust and relationships into a digital format.”
Other recent digital health placements by The Bowdoin Group include: chief growth officer Andrew Cylkowski, for Vynca, which is backed by First Trust Capital Partners; chief revenue officer Dunnie Norman for b.wellConnected Health (UnityPoint Health Ventures); and chief revenue officer Tom Donnelly for Level Ex (JAZZ Ventures). The managing directors leading the searches varied but were tied to the firm’s digital health vertical, led by Mr. Gottlieb and Mr. Walker.
“We recently placed four senior executives at digital health companies — all in this era of COVID-19 — with some clients choosing socially distanced meetings and others choosing to hire site-unseen,” said The Bowdoin Group. “We’re finding that even with the record rates of unemployment and an unpredictable market/economy, this is still very much a candidate driven market, especially at the C-level. Investors are still seeking to find executives at their portfolio companies and chief executives are still trying to round out their C-suites, so we have continued to win business and place candidates, even in this unprecedented environment.”
