DRiWaterstone Human Capital Seeking Chief People Officer for the Union of Concerned Scientists

November 15, 2024 – Arlington, VA-based DRiWaterstone Human Capital was recently retained by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to lead in its search for a chief people officer. Doug Trout, CEO of DRiWaterstone, is leading the assignment.

The chief people officer is responsible for developing and executing human capital strategy in support of the organization’s plan and strategic direction, specifically in employee relations, talent management, change management, performance management, training and development, compensation, and succession planning. In collaboration with the Union of Concerned Scientists’ leadership, the chief people officer will implement policies and practices to build and maintain a unified work culture that exemplifies UCS values, thereby positioning the organization to effectively carry out its mission.

In coordination and collaboration with key stakeholders, the chief people officer provides strategic leadership on human resource and organizational change initiatives while communicating effectively across the organization, through a lens supporting UCS justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) priorities.

UCS is seeking applications from a diverse array of qualified applicants. Those applying must have a minimum of 10 years of HR experience, with at least five years of executive HR experience with a company or organization of at least 100 full-time employees. They should have excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and change management skills. Candidates will have a thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations, particularly those required in a unionized environment, and experience working with outside counsel

New Leadership

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Taps DRiWaterstone Human Capital to Find New Leader

DRiWaterstone Human Capital has been retained by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) n Arlington, VA, to lead in its search for a new president and CEO. Reporting directly to the chair of the board, the CEO of AFP is responsible for the overall strategic direction, governance, and leadership of the organization, driving its continued growth and impact in alignment with its mission. This position serves as the CEO of the Association, AFP Canada, and the AFP foundations. The CEO, in partnership with the board chair, will serve as the public face of both the membership Association and the Foundations, providing leadership across the entities and being an active and contributing leader within the non-profit and philanthropic community globally.


Mr. Trout joined DRiWaterstone in 2020 and has led the non-profit search practice since 2022. His practice areas for the firm have focused on the clean energy sector, public policy centers, research and cultural institutes, and higher education. Before joining DRiWaterstone, Mr. Trout served as acting president and executive vice president at The Montpelier Foundation. Previous roles include executive director at the Miller Center Foundation, director of the graduate fellowship program for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, and director of development at the UVa Center for Politics. He currently sits on the board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Washington, D.C. Chapter, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville, and the James Madison University Center for Civic Engagement.
