Coulter Partners Assists Sequana Medical with Chief Medical Officer Search

October 15, 2020 – Over the past few months, numerous healthcare organizations have turned to executive search firms to find new chief medical officers. In the era of COVID-19 we can expect this to be another burgeoning area for executive search firms. Life sciences-focused search firm Coulter Partners recently assisted Sequana Medical in the recruitment of Oliver Gödje as its new chief medical officer. He replaces Gijs Klarenbeek, who remains with Sequana Medical as senior medical advisor.

“I am very pleased to welcome Dr. Gödje to Sequana Medical and thank the team at Coulter Partners for their professional support in achieving this key appointment,” said Ian Crosbie, CEO of Sequana Medical. “Oliver’s extensive clinical experience, particularly in the heart and liver space, and his international business expertise will be invaluable as we approach a number of key milestones in our alfapump U.S. NASH and alfapump DSR heart failure development programs. I am delighted he will be able to work alongside Gijs Klarenbeek who will continue to work extensively with us, leveraging the tremendous experience we have built up in these large potential markets.”

Dr. Gödje is a highly experienced clinician and medtech industry executive with 18 years of international experience in medical and commercial roles. Prior to joining Sequana Medical, Dr. Gödje served as chief medical officer at Humedics GmbH, medical director and VP of sales and marketing at Hepa Wash GmbH, chief medical officer and chief marketing officer at Tensys Medical Inc., and medical and marketing director of PULSION Medical Systems AG. All are medtech companies in the liver or cardiovascular field. Dr Gödje holds a doctorate and professorship in human medicine and built an extensive knowledge of cardiology during his time as a cardiac surgeon at leading German universities. He was also a consultant and vice chairman of the department of cardiac surgery at the University Hospital of Ulm until 2002.

“I am very glad and honored to be taking on this important role at Sequana Medical at such an exciting time for the company,” said Dr. Gödje. “Having built an extensive knowledge of both cardiac and hepatic disease over the years, I can see the enormous potential for the alfapump platform to treat fluid overload in liver disease and heart failure, as well as other potential opportunities. There is a clear unmet clinical need in those large patient populations where diuretic drugs are no longer effective.”

These take on increased importance when they impact health, disease diagnosis, treatment and, ultimately, human longevity. Having the right leaders in place to sort through these complex challenges, say recruiters serving the sector, is critical — especially those with vision and transformational skills.
