A HOLISTIC TALENT APPROACH TO VALUE & GROWTH CREATIONAnnmarie Neal Chief Talent Officer – Hellman & Friedman
Transformational change today more often than not occurs through the lens of human capital. As chief talent officer at Hellman & Friedman, Annmarie Neal helps drive the value and growth of portfolio companies by focusing on, and improving, their organizational and leadership effectiveness. In her view, value and growth creation begins and ends with a well-rounded approach to talent management. In this unique case study presentation, she outlines how to use talent as the foundation for organizational growth and examines why people are the strategic differentiator for organizations undergoing transformational change.
CHALLENGES OF HIGH GROWTH IN A COMPETITIVE MARKETJosh Withers Founder & Managing Director – True Search
Going from “zero to 60” on the growth scale can be tough. When times are slower, an executive role can feel siloed and one dimensional. But when high growth kicks in, people are constantly being stretched, which can push company infrastructure to a breaking point. How are smart companies navigating these periods of acceleration in a competitive talent environment? Josh Withers, founder and managing director of True Search, provides answers and explores how today’s successful companies attract growth-driven talent in a candidate market, how to keep high performers, and how to help current and next generation leaders reach their full potential.
RECRUITING NUANCES BETWEEN PE & VC ENVIRONMENTSLisa Peacock-Edwards (Moderator) Managing Partner – Wilton & Bain
Private equity and venture capital firms share many common disciplines and approaches. Both sectors are highly-charged and their portfolio investments are often measured by returns in the millions or often even in the billions of dollars. To this end, identifying the right executive leadership talent inside the portfolios is often times the primary focus of talent partners as they seek the most highly-skilled professionals who can operate within a pressure-packed environment that drives the highest levels of business execution. But while PE and VC share many commonalities, the nuances of portfolio company talent evaluation, acquisition, and retention can be quite different. In this panel discussion, five leading talent professionals at some of the most prominent private investment firms discuss the unique aspects of recruiting top talent within their portfolios, and how their firms’ investment profiles and strategies dramatically impact how they each uniquely approach this search for key executive leadership within their companies.

CREATING BETTER PAY EQUITY LEVERS TO RETAIN TALENTPaula Judge VP Talent – Accel Partners
Venture-backed portfolio companies are staying private longer – and that is completely altering the way talent is being valued and paid. But as companies scale over longer periods of time, what are the equity management strategies that enable attracting and retaining talent – while aligning the interests of investors, founders, and employees? Paula Judge, VP Talent at Accel Partners, examines how the firm encourages their portfolio companies to develop a compensation philosophy that will secure the right C-level talent at the right time, based on their unique value proposition. In this powerful presentation, we’ll discover how she’s doing it at one of the premier venture capital firms in Silicon Valley.
THE CRITICAL LINK BETWEEN SCIENCE AND HIRING
CEO – Hogan Assessments
No PE or venture capital firm should begin its evaluation of candidates without first turning to a talent assessment system. These assessments are designed to predict job performance by assessing personality and core values. Scott Gregory, chief executive officer of Hogan Assessments, examines the critical link between science and hiring.
Investing in Tech or Talent? When it Comes to the Talent, Do You Actually Know How?Alan Guarino Vice Chairman – Korn Ferry Jean-Marc Laouchez President – Korn Ferry Institute
The financial success of a transaction is defined by a simple comparison: price paid versus enterprise value generated above that price. A critical assumption to this equation – often overlooked – is the future economic value of leaders and talent beyond their compensation. But how do you measure that value and optimize the capital you deploy? Making the intangible tangible is the subject of this lively keynote presentation. Alan Guarino, vice chairman of Korn Ferry, and Jean-Marc Laouchez, president of the Korn Ferry Institute, discuss an approach to quantify and optimize the value of people embedded in the deal valuation and the eventual outcome. They will be joined by senior partners Joe Healey and Chris Cantarella, contributors to this dynamic research-based session.
Maximizing Partnerships With Search FirmsRyan Greene (Moderator) Operating Partner – Francisco Partners
Private equity and venture capital firms are in a bidding war for top talent. For them, leadership is the new bottom line – the critical lever to maximize and sustain growth in often highly time-sensitive environments. But there is a global talent shortage in the C-suite, and that is putting search firms in the crosshairs of sourcing, evaluating and recruiting the best leadership available at any given time. In this far ranging panel discussion, leaders from four top search firms dedicated to the PE and VC sectors examine how they successfully collaborate with clients. These experts then look to the future and explore how these partnerships will likely change.

Finding Talent and the Race to Fill the VoidLeah Scanlan Operating Partner – Khosla Ventures
The way start-up companies build teams and acquire top talent has undergone a massive shift recently. Arguably, it is the single biggest transformation CEOs have had to face in today’s venture environment. Leah Scanlan, an operating partner at Khosla Ventures, examines the catalysts for this change, including the substantial increase of $100M+ ‘mega-rounds’ and the impact that new reality has had on the competition for talent. Given her focus on people management and human capital management, she will explore how chief executives now must readjust their approach to hiring for overall organizational optimization.
Securing the Right Leadership Through Human Capital CollaborationKristin Richards Director, Human Capital – TPG Growth Martin Coulter Operating Partner, Healthcare – TPG Growth
Securing the right leadership for portfolio companies is a complex process. In the most successful circumstances, it often fuses the needs of a ‘commercial’ operating partner and a human capital professional. Getting that collaboration to work effectively can make all the difference between a company that grows and outperforms vs one that falls short and fails. In today’s closing session, we explore how this partnership works at TPG, one of the world’s largest private equity concerns.
