Building D&I Talent Pipelines for Investment Advantage

Moderator: Dennis Grady Partner – Spire Search Partners

While many industries are making continual strides in their diversity and inclusion hiring efforts, private equity is lagging. Today, just 18 percent of all PE professionals are female, with just 10 percent serving in senior-level roles. For professionals of color and those identified as LGBTQ, the metrics are even more discouraging. In this special panel discussion, experts from private equity and executive search examine how diversity of experience, culture, race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation can provide distinct perspectives that engender a rich workplace and stimulate better investment decisions.

Profound competitive advantages lie ahead for any organization that can predict the performance of their top leaders. But in today’s complex and volatile environment, leadership qualities are ever-changing – and that often means the traits that propel leaders into the C-suite can be different from and in sharp contrast to what predicts their success. To help sort it all out, search & leadership advisory experts Jeff Warren and Jenna Fisher – along with a panel of C-suite portfolio company leaders – will present proprietary results from the latest Russell Reynolds Associates’ Leadership Span™ assessment of C-suite portfolio company leaders. They will then examine the competing competencies required to navigate the frenetic pace, fluid environment and transformational demands of a PE-backed portfolio company.

Private equity firms are continually improving the process of talent management led by forward-thinking HR professionals. In the following presentation, Jason O’Briant, managing director of human resources at one of the world’s largest and most-respected private equity firms, discusses this dynamic shift in focus and how this move will help to improve everything from talent acquisition and recruitment to engagement and retention strategies.

Dan Campbell

Dan Campbell Partner – JM Search

PE firms have learned from past crises that during times of turmoil it is critical that they take a more hands-on approach with portfolio companies. This often means looking closer at talent, specifically in leadership roles, and identifying ways to harness higher levels of leadership to increase results and returns. Many firms are now deploying a much wider range of capabilities to drive value, such as building operating partner teams, and adding more specialized functional expertise. In this presentation, Dan Campbell, a partner with JM Search, will examine how private equity firms and their portfolios are evolving their business strategies and developing new approaches to recruiting top talent based on experiences and learnings from the global pandemic.

Anish Batlaw

Anish Batlaw Operating Partner – General Atlantic

Every company tapping new C-level talent wants both quality and efficiency – the more quickly successful candidates are put in place the faster a portfolio company can begin to see positive results. For this leading PE firm, getting top management teams in place for their portfolio businesses has become nothing short of an obsession. In the following keynote presentation, Anish Batlaw, the operating partner who leads the human capital efforts in support of its portfolio companies at General Atlantic, reveals how he and his talent colleagues have improved speed and accuracy of C-suite hires. Mr. Batlaw then examines the significant impact installing the right management team has during the first six months of an investment.
