GISCI Announces New Executive Director

(Sept. 17, 2020 Des Plaines, IL) After a comprehensive national search, the Board of Directors of GISCI is pleased to announce Dr. Candice Luebbering as its new Executive Director, effective October 1, 2020.

Martin Roche, GISCI Board President announced, “I am delighted to share the results of our national search for a new Executive Director. Dr. Luebbering possesses all the skills we were looking for to lead GISCI into the future. She brings a deep understanding of the value of the GISP to our profession with a solid vision for how to enhance the value for GIS professionals and their employers.”

Candice most recently served as Director of Outreach and Membership Services at the American Association of Geographers (AAG). Her work experience there included building and managing a volunteer program to support GIS in K-12 education, teaching geospatial data collection and analysis methods in international workshop settings, supporting student membership engagement and recruitment, developing AAG outreach materials and activities, and regularly contributing to the organization’s communications.

She reports, “I am truly excited to take on this role and grateful for the chance to learn from and build upon GISCI’s history and excellent leadership. This position provides the opportunity to engage and promote the GIS field in our collective efforts to further elevate the profession. It is a platform to advocate for a discipline and community that I am passionate about, on behalf of an esteemed organization I am honored to represent.”

Candice has a PhD in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis and a MS in Geography, both from Virginia Tech. Her undergraduate degree is in Sociology/Anthropology from Truman State University. She is a certified GISP since 2015. Originally from Missouri, she currently resides in Washington DC.

The Board of Directors conducted a thorough search process this past summer led by The Moran Company. Based in Kansas City, The Moran Company specializes in recruiting top leadership positions for nonprofit organizations across the nation.

The board is deeply grateful for the support of Bill Hodge throughout the search process as the Retiring Executive Director. Bill has provided tremendous leadership, energy, and enthusiasm as the Executive Director for over 7 years, and prior to that, as a GISCI board and committee member.
