Talent Strategy As a Driver of Value

Graham Elton Chairman, EMEA Private Equity Business – Bain & Company

Fit-for-purpose portfolio company leadership is critical to delivering strong returns, but selecting the right executive talent remains elusive. A frequent source of value dilution is the lack of a direct connection between the value creation plan and the leadership talent strategy. Based on his experience as an advisor to PE firms and chairman of portfolio companies, Graham Elton, chairman of EMEA private equity at Bain & Company, examines how companies can drive investment returns by aligning their talent management programs to the value creation plan.

Christian Trümpler

Christian Trümpler Vice President – Partners Group

While private equity rightfully takes pride in attracting and employing the best and the brightest in the workforce, talent – and how to manage it – remains a relatively underdeveloped skillset. Investment firms that manage portfolio talent right leverage this skillset better than most others to achieve higher returns. In the following presentation, Christian Trümpler, vice president at Partners Group, outlines how his firm applies an active ownership model to lure and retain top notch industry leaders onto their portfolio company boards. He examines how these ‘boardroom operators’ team up with the management teams of the firm’s portfolio companies to advance their businesses, and drive superior returns.

Networking Break

Integrating new hires is a critical component of the recruiting process for every organization. But since the pandemic, onboarding has taken on new significance as workplace dynamics shift to leaner teams embedded in hybrid work environments. For private equity firms, modern day ‘organizational socialization’ is reshaping integration strategies by maximizing employee engagement, thereby minimizing turnover. This expert panel of top talent and recruitment professionals will discuss the most effective measures that PE firms are implementing to ensure a seamless integration process.

Leadership Forecasting: How to Maximize Talent Potential

Scott Gregory CEO – Hogan Assessments

PE firms are experts at determining expected rates of return on their investments. Putting the right talent in the right place to drive that return hasn’t come as easily. To avoid bad hires, maximize talent potential and seamlessly match candidate values with company culture, talent assessments often decode the intricacies of candidates’ behaviors and lead to optimal hires. The following panel comprised of talent experts from the PE sector, organization performance consulting, and executive search explore how private equity firms evaluate and develop talent and examine ways in which they determine return on talent decisions and investments.

Emily Taylor

Emily Taylor Managing Director – Russell Reynolds Associates

The accelerating evolution in portfolio company governance has been driven by the confluence of several factors, including legislation, LP pressure, and the relentless pursuit of competitive advantage. While GPs have historically been the dominant voices on portfolio company boards, they are increasingly folding in fresh perspectives and expertise by appointing independent non-executive directors. As a critical part of the arsenal for mitigating risk and creating value, directors are being appointed at unprecedented rates. Drawing from Russell Reynolds Associates’ extensive experience as a market-leading board advisory and search partner to private and public companies, Emily Taylor, global co-leader of the firm’s private equity practice, will distill key themes, lessons, and best practices in the unique context of portfolio company boards.

Elizabeth Wallace

Elizabeth Wallace Head of Portfolio Talent – Hg Capital

Transformational change today more often than not occurs through the lens of human capital. As head of portfolio talent at Hg – a leading European investor with nearly $40 billion in funds under management and a portfolio comprising over 50,000 employees across the U.K., U.S., and Europe – Elizabeth Wallace knows first-hand the importance that talent plays as the greatest value creation lever. In her view, value creation begins and ends with a well-rounded – and modern – approach to talent management. In this unique presentation, Ms. Wallace outlines how to create and evolve a modern talent function within PE. She will examine the shift from tactical to a business critical strategic function and explore why talent is the strategic differentiator for organizations undergoing growth and transformational change.

Hein Knaapen

Hein Knaapen Managing Partner, Europe – CEO.works

Most operating partners at private equity firms apply significant rigor to strategic and capital investment and allocation decisions. That same rigor is not always applied to talent investment and people allocation judgments. This results in value leakage, whereby portfolio companies fail to realize the expected value implied in the investment thesis. According to Hein Knaapen, managing partner of CEO.works in Europe, having the right talent focusing on delivering the right value is key to eliminating this value dilemma. In this insightful presentation, he will share an approach for mitigating value leakage as a result of often overlooked rigor in making talent investment and allocation decisions.

Anish Batlaw

Why “Time to Hire” for PE Chiefs is Critical

Anish Batlaw Operating Partner – General Atlantic

Every company tapping new C-level talent wants both quality and efficiency – the more quickly successful candidates are put in place the faster a portfolio company can begin to see positive results. For this leading PE firm, getting top management teams in place for their portfolio businesses has become nothing short of an obsession. In the following keynote presentation, Anish Batlaw, the operating partner who leads the human capital efforts in support of its portfolio companies at General Atlantic, reveals how he and his talent colleagues have improved speed and accuracy of C-suite hires. Mr. Batlaw then examines the significant impact installing the right management team has during the first six months of an investment.
