Talent Strategy As a Driver of Value

Introduction by: John Wittorf Managing Partner, EMEA – Beecher Reagan Graham Elton Chairman, EMEA Private Equity Business – Bain & Company

Fit-for-purpose portfolio company leadership is critical to delivering strong returns, but selecting the right executive talent remains elusive. A frequent source of value dilution is the lack of a direct connection between the value creation plan and the leadership talent strategy. Based on his experience as an advisor to PE firms and chairman of portfolio companies, Graham Elton, chairman of EMEA private equity at Bain & Company, examines how companies can drive investment returns by aligning their talent management programs to the value creation plan.

WHY TALENT REMAINS A BLIND SPOT FOR PRIVATE EQUITY

Christian Trümpler Senior Vice President – Partners Group

While private equity rightfully takes pride in attracting and employing the best and the brightest in the workforce, talent – and how to manage it – remains a relatively underdeveloped skillset. Investment firms that manage portfolio talent right leverage this skillset better than most others to achieve higher returns. In the following presentation, Christian Trümpler, vice president at Partners Group, outlines how his firm applies an active ownership model to lure and retain top notch industry leaders onto their portfolio company boards. He examines how these ‘boardroom operators’ team up with the management teams of the firm’s portfolio companies to advance their businesses, and drive superior returns.

ELIMINATING VALUE LEAKAGE IN PORTFOLIO COMPANIES

Hein Knaapen Managing Partner, Europe – CEO.works Sumeet Salwan Co-Founder & CEO – CEO.works

Most operating partners at private equity firms apply significant rigor to strategic and capital investment and allocation decisions. That same rigor is not always applied to talent investment and people allocation judgments. This results in value leakage, whereby portfolio companies fail to realize the expected value implied in the investment thesis. According to Hein Knaapen, managing partner and Sumeet Salwan, CEO & co-founder of CEO.works in Europe, having the right talent focusing on delivering the right value is key to eliminating this value dilemma. In this insightful presentation, both will share an approach for mitigating value leakage as a result of often overlooked rigor in making talent investment and allocation decisions.

UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF PORTFOLIO COMPANY BOARDS

Emily Taylor Managing Director – Russell Reynolds Associates Agnes Greaves Managing Director – Russell Reynolds Associates

The accelerating evolution in portfolio company governance has been driven by the confluence of several factors, including legislation, LP pressure, and the relentless pursuit of competitive advantage. While GPs have historically been the dominant voices on portfolio company boards, they are increasingly folding in fresh perspectives and expertise by appointing independent non-executive directors. As a critical part of the arsenal for mitigating risk and creating value, directors are being appointed at unprecedented rates. Drawing from Russell Reynolds Associates’ extensive experience as a market-leading board advisory and search partner to private and public companies, Emily Taylor, global co-leader of the firm’s private equity practice and Agnes Greaves, global co-leader of the firm’s core & growth technology and VC & growth equity practices, will distill key themes, lessons, and best practices in the unique context of portfolio company boards.
