CHICAGO, IL, December 21, 2017 –
Rhyan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up and went to college in the Midwest. After earning my BA in Art History, I moved out to California. I enrolled in an MA program and received a degree in Museum Management. As part of the graduate work, I did an internship with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles which led to a full-time job. I worked in the development office there and then moved to the what is today, the California Science Center. I was asked to join a fundraising consulting firm that was based in Boston and was opening a Los Angeles office.
I helped establish the office and worked with clients throughout California. I felt that I should be closer to family and had always enjoyed my visits to Chicago. I landed a temporary role at the MacArthur Foundation supporting search consultants that were working on a variety of searches. This led to an offer to join a boutique search firm which worked with private, nonprofit and quasi-governmental organizations. I joined the team of another boutique firm in Chicago that focused exclusively on the nonprofit sector. After 10 years with that firm, I established Noetic Search where we focus on recruiting executive and senior level leaders for the nonprofit sector.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Running your own business in a competitive niche market has its struggles. We have fantastic search consultants and search firms in the Chicago area and around the country. Competing with firms that have a larger team and infrastructure can be challenging but we have been able to maintain a steady flow of interesting clients over the past seven-plus years.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Noetic Search – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Noetic is a boutique search firm recruiting leadership for the nonprofit sector. We are generalists. A significant number of our searches are for senior level development professionals. We also do a lot of work with animal welfare organizations. Because we are a small firm we are able to provide our clients with a very personalized approach. We form a close working partnership with our clients and have built excellent relationships with candidates across the country. We are very respectful of our relationships and are extremely responsive and proactive.
Our business has developed based on word of mouth and repeat business from our clients. Clients know that they are working with consultants with 20 plus years of search experience who are directly involved not only in managing the client relationship but also in outreach to identify and develop candidates. We are able to provide our clients with an experience that is high touch, professional and reputable.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are excited about continuing our work in the nonprofit sector. As the role of government diminishes, the need for highly skilled, business-oriented talent is needed more than ever. We look forward to continuing to identify leaders that are truly passionate, mission-driven individuals. We see our work as a ripple effect making a positive change to our client organizations and the communities that they serve.
