Library of Congress selects JDG to conduct executive search

ROCKVILLE, MD, August 16, 2018 – The Library of Congress has retained JDG Associates to identify their Associate Librarian for Library Services (ALLS).  Founded in 1800, the Library is the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation.  It is the country’s first established cultural institution and the largest library in the world, with more than 167 million items on approximately 840 miles of bookshelves.

The collections include more than 38 million books and other print materials, 3.6 million recordings, 14 million photographs, 5.5 million maps, 7.1 million pieces of sheet music and 70 million manuscripts.  The LOC occupies three buildings on Capitol Hill.

The Thomas Jefferson Building (1897) is the original LC building.  The John Adams Building was built in 1938 and the James Madison Memorial Building was completed in 1981.

The ALLS, which oversees a total staff of 1200 federal employees and a $200M budget, is responsible for the budget, personnel management, policy administration, and operational effectiveness for the entire Library Services unit.

The ALLS directs the acquisition, organization, and preservation of the Library’s universal collection of materials; for ensuring the quality of the collections and providing rapid and effective access to them, serving as the leader in maintaining and securing the Library’s collection in all formats and media.
