(March 2022) Oregon Health and Science University has selected leading academic medicine executive search firm Harris Search Associates to lead the search for its next Chair of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
OHSU seeks an entrepreneurial Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) with a strong record of excellence in academic leadership and scholarly activity including peer-reviewed research and enthusiasm to grow the Department’s academic, research, and clinical programs.
One of three academic departments in the School of Dental Medicine, the department has a distinguished history of providing current and relevant education and training to pre-doctoral dental students and residents as well as proving instruction as needed to other clinical specialty programs.
The Chair is responsible for overall management for the department including the assignment of faculty to teaching and clinical responsibilities, mentoring of faculty, management of the appropriate staff, CODA accreditation, faculty/staff compliance, recruitment of new faculty, facilitating interprofessional collaboration, and financial management of the department.
From its modest start in 1887, OHSU has grown into a world class academic health center composed of five schools: Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health; two hospitals: OHSU Hospital and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital; 60 research centers and institutes, and numerous medical practices in the greater Portland area. The Portland VA Medical Center is connected to OHSU structurally by a sky bridge and functionally by shared staff, trainees and research and educational opportunities. The University is the state’s only comprehensive public academic health center and the only institution in Oregon that grants doctoral degrees in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and health-focused engineering.
Today OHSU is a thriving institution that has seen enrollment increase by 16% over the last decade. OHSU offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees and/or certificates in over 60 accredited education programs, several of them joint with other institutions. In the fall of 2019, over 2,500 students were enrolled at OHSU and nearly 1,500 students were enrolled in the newly established joint OHSU/Portland State University School of Public Health. Nearly all of OHSU’s undergraduate students are in nursing and public health programs. Additionally, OHSU provides training to over 800 interns, residents, and fellows in over 80 accredited residency and fellowship programs and delivers continuing education to thousands of healthcare professionals each year. OHSU has approximately 16,000 employees, including nearly 3,000 faculty. OHSU also engages over 2,000 volunteer faculty in working at clinical sites throughout Oregon to help train its students in a community setting.
