ECA Partners is pleased to announce the promotion of Burton Francis to Managing Partner from Managing Director, recognizing his contributions to the firm’s continued growth and his leadership in helping establish ECA as one of the premier human capital partners serving the private equity community. The promotion marks an important milestone for both Mr. Burton and the firm as ECA continues to expand its capabilities, deepen its relationships with investor-backed businesses, and build the leadership infrastructure needed to support its next phase of growth.
Since joining ECA in 2019 as a Senior Director, Mr. Francis has played a central role in the firm’s expansion, deepening relationships with private equity sponsors, portfolio companies, search funds, and other investor-backed organizations. Throughout his tenure, he has helped ECA move beyond a traditional executive search model and further establish itself as a trusted advisor on critical human capital decisions, connecting investment-level value creation priorities with the leadership capabilities required to execute against them.
In his new role as Managing Partner, Mr. Francis will continue working closely with clients while assuming broader responsibilities related to ECA’s long-term strategic growth, operational development, leadership training, and expansion in key markets, particularly New York. He will also play an increased role in mentoring the firm’s next generation of leaders and strengthening the infrastructure required to support ECA as it scales.
Founded on the belief that exceptional businesses are built by exceptional people, ECA Partners has become a trusted partner to private equity firms, portfolio companies, search funds, and high-growth organizations seeking transformative leaders. By combining deep industry expertise, rigorous analytical processes, and proprietary technology, the firm has developed a differentiated approach to identifying and assessing executive talent while helping organizations make informed human capital decisions. Mr. Francis’s promotion reflects ECA’s broader commitment to developing leaders who combine analytical rigor, intellectual curiosity, operating judgment, and a client-first mindset.
According to ECA leadership, Mr. Francis’s promotion represents a natural next step in the firm’s development as it continues expanding its capabilities and strengthening its position within the market.
“Burt has earned this promotion through years of demonstrated leadership,” said Ken Kanara, ECA’s CEO and Managing Partner. “As one of our earliest Director hires, Burt has been instrumental in building ECA’s reputation among private equity sponsors, developing deep expertise placing C-suite executives within PE-backed portfolio companies and search funds. As Managing Partner, he’ll take on an even greater role in the growth of ECA by continuing to build out our New York presence, training and mentoring our next generation of leaders, and deepening the trusted relationships that make us a go-to partner for PE firms.”
Mr. Francis’s journey to this position has been shaped by a distinctive combination of engineering training, management consulting, operating leadership, and executive search. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, developing an analytical foundation that has remained central to his approach throughout his career. He later joined Oliver Wyman as a Senior Associate, working as a strategy consultant across transportation, manufacturing, financial services, and telecommunications, with experience spanning pricing, customer strategy, commercial excellence, corporate strategy, M&A due diligence, and post-deal private equity work.
Following his time at Oliver Wyman, Mr. Francis moved from advising businesses to running one himself. In 2017, he became President and CEO of Starbase Technologies, a Pittsfield, Massachusetts-based custom precision manufacturer of molds, tooling, and mold bases used in applications ranging from high-volume consumer disposable molds to large single-cavity solid-block tools. He served as President and CEO through 2019 and continued as Executive Chairman of the Board through 2023. That operating experience gave him firsthand exposure to the practical challenges of leading a manufacturing business, making high-stakes personnel decisions, setting strategic priorities, and translating an investment thesis into day-to-day execution.
When Mr. Francis joined ECA in 2019 as a Senior Director, he brought a perspective that few executive search professionals possess. Having worked as both a strategy consultant and an operator, he understood firsthand that executive hiring decisions cannot be separated from a company’s broader strategic and operational objectives. That experience has informed his work with private equity sponsors, portfolio companies, and search fund entrepreneurs, enabling him to approach executive search not simply as a recruiting exercise but as a critical component of value creation.
As private equity firms have become increasingly sophisticated in their approaches to value creation, ECA has worked alongside clients to ensure that leadership decisions are aligned with broader investment strategies and long-term business objectives. Mr. Francis has been closely involved in that evolution, helping strengthen the firm’s consultative partnership model and encouraging a more integrated approach in which leadership needs are considered in the context of an investment’s strategic priorities, operating plan, and growth objectives.
Among the accomplishments of which he is most proud, Mr. Francis points to the firm’s transition toward a more consultative partnership model.
“Driving the evolution towards a consultative partnership with our clients focused on distilling investment-level value creation theses down to critical human capital decision-making has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my time at ECA,” said Mr. Francis.
That philosophy reflects a broader shift taking place throughout the executive search industry. Increasingly, organizations are seeking partners who can do more than identify qualified candidates. Investor-backed companies in particular need advisors who understand the strategic objectives behind each hiring decision and recognize the significant impact that leadership choices can have on organizational performance, execution speed, culture, and ultimately enterprise value. For ECA, that means understanding not only the role being filled, but also the investment logic, operating environment, and value creation plan that make the role important in the first place.
Mr. Francis credits ECA’s people and culture as the factors that initially attracted him to the organization and ultimately convinced him to build his career there.
“It was one hundred percent the people and the intellectual horsepower that attracted me, and I think it’s the same thing that has made me stay,” Mr. Francis said. “The intellectual curiosity throughout the organization has always stood out to me.”
That emphasis on intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning has long been a defining characteristic of ECA’s culture. As the organization has grown, the firm has remained committed to creating an environment that encourages innovation, embraces new ideas, and empowers team members to challenge conventional approaches to executive search and talent strategy. The firm’s leadership believes that preserving those qualities will be essential as ECA continues to scale and formalize processes that were originally built for a smaller organization.
Mr. Francis believes those principles will continue to play an essential role as ECA enters the next stage of its development. For him, the promotion to Managing Partner represents both an important professional milestone and a meaningful expression of confidence from the firm’s leadership team.
“This promotion crystallizes our firm’s leadership’s confidence in my ability to continue to lead from the front and help focus on the continued growth and evolution of ECA,” he said.
Looking ahead, Mr. Francis sees significant opportunities for the organization as it continues expanding its reach and capabilities. He believes ECA has reached an important inflection point in its development, one that will require continued investment in infrastructure, talent, and operational processes to support the firm’s long-term ambitions. In his view, the systems that helped ECA succeed as a smaller, entrepreneurial organization now need to be tested, strengthened, and standardized so they can support a larger and more complex business without sacrificing the firm’s speed, quality, or culture.
“We are at a growth inflection point where the small-business processes that helped us reach this point need to be proven and solidified to support our transition into the mid-sized business arena,” Mr. Francis said. “Building that infrastructure and bolstering it to enable continued growth is what excites me most.”
That responsibility will include helping ECA strengthen internal operating processes while continuing to invest in the people who will lead the firm in the future. As Managing Partner, Mr. Francis is expected to devote increasing attention to training and mentoring developing leaders, supporting the growth of the New York office, and ensuring that the firm’s client service model scales alongside the organization. His experience moving between consulting, operating leadership, and executive search gives him a particularly relevant perspective as ECA works to institutionalize its best practices without losing the entrepreneurial qualities that helped drive its early success.
In addition to strengthening internal capabilities, Mr. Francis remains focused on further establishing ECA’s reputation within the marketplace and expanding the firm’s influence within the private equity ecosystem. His goal is not simply for ECA to be known as a strong search firm, but to become a recognized thought partner for the human capital decisions that matter most to investors and the companies they back.
“Our focus moving forward is on continuing to establish ECA as the go-to brand and thought partner for critical investor-backed human capital decision-making,” he said.
That vision aligns closely with the direction in which ECA has been moving. As competition for exceptional talent has intensified, organizations have increasingly recognized the importance of thoughtful, data-informed human capital strategies. For private equity firms and their portfolio companies, the stakes are especially high: the right executive can accelerate a value creation plan, build organizational capability, and increase the probability of a successful investment outcome. ECA believes that combining industry expertise, rigorous evaluation methodologies, and long-term client partnerships will continue to differentiate the firm.
The promotion represents not only an acknowledgment of Mr. Francis’s individual accomplishments but also an important milestone in ECA’s broader journey. By continuing to invest in exceptional talent, embrace innovation, deepen client relationships, and strengthen the infrastructure supporting the business, the firm aims to build on the foundation that has driven its growth since its founding. For Mr. Francis, that next stage is an opportunity to help ensure that ECA’s culture and client-first approach remain defining characteristics even as the organization grows in scale and complexity.
