DICK’S Sporting Goods Appoints VP of Talent from Search by Hanold Associates

CHICAGO (Nov. 5, 2020) – DICK’S Sporting Goods, the largest omni-channel sporting goods retailer based in the U.S., has appointed Penelope Sur as Vice President of Talent. Hanold Associates’ Lisa Butkus and Keri Gavin led the search for this crucial role.

Reporting directly to DICK’S Chief People Officer, Sur will lead all talent acquisition, talent management and learning and development functions. She will be responsible for translating business strategy to talent strategy, and for developing best-in-class programs that attract and retain exceptional talent.

Prior to joining DICK’S, Sur served as Head of Training and Talent at Centric Brands, where she built a full talent suite for the organization’s HR team, supporting 350+ stores and thousands of employees. Sur has also held strategic roles in learning and talent management at L’Oreal in her 11-year tenure there.

“Penelope has a passion for talent management that is unparalleled and a level of energy that is contagious! Not only does she bring a global perspective to the talent function, but her expertise in training and learning development will be a huge asset to the highly dispersed workforce at DICK’S Sporting Goods,” said Lisa Butkus, Hanold Partner. “Penelope is steeped in consumer-centric and retail industry knowledge, which will make her a trusted advisor to Chief People Officer Julie Lodge-Jarrett. We look forward to seeing her impact on shaping and nurturing DICK’S phenomenal culture!”

Sur’s appointment comes at a record-setting period in the retailer’s history. DICK’S had revenues of $8.44 billion and a market cap of over $4 billion in 2019, and has seen significant growth in 2020. Despite COVID-19, the company saw record second quarter results. Driven by its omnichannel platform, online sales rose nearly 200%, which propelled its market cap over $5 billion.
