(Jan. 12, 2021) Following the completion of a national search, Central Connecticut State University announced on Jan. 12 the appointment of Dr. Stacey A. Miller as the University’s inaugural Vice President for Equity and Inclusion. Her first day at CCSU will be Feb. 22.
“Dr. Miller’s hiring is instrumental in our reorganization of the Office of Equity and Inclusion and achieving key goals in the University’s 2030 strategic plan,” says CCSU President Zulma R. Toro. “I am confident she will be an excellent agent for change as we find new ways to increase access to higher education and foster values that encourage the free and respectful exchange of ideas.”
The appointment of Dr. Miller also advances President Toro’s Action Plan to Change Campus Culture, which was launched in 2018. The plan aims to cultivate an inclusive, equitable, and safe campus environment that enables students, faculty, and staff to achieve their full potential.
For the past five years, Dr. Miller served as Associate Provost for Inclusion and Retention at Valparaiso University (Valpo) in northwestern Indiana. As the chief diversity officer, she was responsible for the creation and implementation of the University’s strategic vision for diversity and inclusion and worked on a number of initiatives to strengthen the institutional climate and hiring practices.
Her responsibilities at Valpo also included oversight of the Academic Success Center, the Access & Accommodations Resources Center, and the offices of International and Multicultural programs. Working in collaboration with the University’s Title IX Coordinator, University Legal Counsel, and Human Resources, Dr. Miller provided consultation and advisement on student, faculty, and staff complaints of discrimination.
Prior to her tenure at Valpo, Dr. Miller served as the director of residential life in the Student Affairs division at the University of Vermont (UVM), a position she held for 12 years. She also served as a lecturer for the higher education and student affairs graduate program at UVM and received her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies there.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to be joining the CCSU community,” Dr. Miller says. “As a graduate of a state university, I truly understand its transformative power and never hesitate to acknowledge the difference it has made in my own life. More importantly, I look forward to working with CCSU’s dedicated leadership, students, faculty and staff in strengthening and enhancing our University’s commitment to inclusion and equity.”
Dr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University.
