Walter H. Ettinger, M.D., M.B.A., serves as Of Counsel to the Witt/Kieffer Academic Medicine and Health Sciences practice. In this role, he supports the recruitment of presidents and CEOs, CMOs, deans, departmental chairs and other senior level positions for academic and community health systems. Dr. Ettinger has more than 30 years of leadership experience in both academic and community healthcare organizations. His areas of interest and expertise include population health management, clinical performance improvement, systems of care for the elderly, and physician engagement and leadership.
Most recently, he served as senior vice president and chief medical officer for the University of Maryland Medical System and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Prior to this, Dr. Ettinger led UMass Memorial Medical Center as the organization’s president. During his time at UMass Memorial he was professor of medicine and served as the associate vice-provost for clinical and population research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has also held leadership roles with Accretive Health, Lenox Hill Hospital, Virtua Health, and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Ettinger completed his residency in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital and his post-doctoral fellowships in rheumatology and geriatric medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and National Institute on Aging.
He has served on several boards, including the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board, American Association of Medical Colleges Research Advisory Board and the Massachusetts Hospital Association Board of Trustees. Dr. Ettinger has been the principal investigator on numerous grants and contracts and has published over 130 articles, book chapters and books.
