Tricia Bork Canavan is a Senior Consultant with Sterling Martin Associates in the Washington, DC office. With more than nine years of experience in executive search, Tricia specializes in establishing strong relationships with clients, search committees, Boards of Directors, volunteers and other stakeholders. She is an expert in candidate identification, recruitment and organizational assessment.
She has successfully completed searches for more than 40 organizations during those nine years in the executive search field. Prior to executive search, Tricia spent more than 28 years in executive roles in nonprofit and association management in a variety of diverse organizations, ranging from small, struggling enterprises to complex and visible organizations.
Tricia served as the Executive Director of the American Association of Medical Society Executives, the professional organization of chief executive officers and senior staff of medical societies. There she rebuilt the national reputation and resources of the association by implementing programs and services that significantly increased membership and corporate support. Tricia began her career in association management with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the U.S. governing body for intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports. She served the NCAA in a variety of positions, including 12 years as the Vice President for Championships. In that capacity, she oversaw the administration and management of 82 annual intercollegiate championships in 23 men’s and women’s sports.
She also served as the Chief Staff Liaison to the NCAA’s Executive Committee; managed special projects, oversaw the work of several special and ad hoc committees, and managed a high-profile Executive Director search for the organization. Tricia holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas and a Certification for Teaching English as a Second Language from Oxford University.
