Richard Torgerson


Richard L. Torgerson joined AGB Search as an excutive search consultant in 2013. Dr. Torgerson also assesses candidates for AGB Search Interim Services. Dr. Torgerson’s recent searches include:

  • Gustavus Adolphus College (MN) – Chief Financial Officer
  • Des Moines University (IA) – Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Kansas Health Science Center (KS) – Founding Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Hanover College (IN) – Chief Academic Officer

Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Torgerson had recently stepped down as President of Luther College after serving for 14 years. In addition, Dr. Torgerson served in faculty and administrative positions at five liberal arts colleges – Wartburg College (IA), Texas Lutheran University, Bethany College (WV), Gustavus Adolphus College (MN), and in 1999 became the ninth President of Luther College (IA).

During his 14 years as Luther’s President, the endowment tripled to more than $130 million. He led two comprehensive strategic planning initiatives which framed three fundraising campaigns securing in excess of $215 million. As an early signatory to the College and University President’s Climate Commitment, he positioned Luther College as a leader in campus operational efficiency and carbon footprint reduction.  He has been a frequent lecturer and presenter on topics related to higher education leadership, fundraising, board of trustee development, strategic planning, learning assessment, and campus environmental sustainability initiatives. He currently serves as a member of the Concordia College Board of Regents.

Dr. Torgerson is the recipient of an outstanding faculty award at Texas Lutheran University, the Council of Independent Colleges Academic Deans Award, and a Distinguished Service Award and honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Concordia College (Moorhead, MN). He was awarded the Norwegian Royal Order of Merit by the King of Norway.

Dr. Torgerson received his Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Washington State University.
