R. Stanton Hales

Senior Consultant

Dr. R. Stanton Hales joined Academic Search as senior consultant in 2007, and in his consulting work he has focused on searches at independent institutions, including Alma College, California Lutheran University, Drake University, Drew University, Hiram College, Hollins University, Juniata College, Occidental College, Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, Roger Williams University, the University of Redlands,Trinity University, and Widener University. These searches have been for presidents, provosts, vice presidents for academic affairs, and deans.

Dr. Hales served as president of The College of Wooster from 1995 to 2007 and prior to that for five years as Wooster’s vice president for academic affairs. Earlier, Dr. Hales was professor of mathematics and associate dean of the college at Pomona College, where he received the Rudolph J. Wig Distinguished Professorship Award. Dr. Hales’s professional involvements have included the Board of Directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the Executive Committees of the Annapolis Group, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio, the Great Lakes Colleges Association, and the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities. In 2003-04, he served on the Governor’s Commission (OH) for Higher Education and the Economy.

Dr. Hales graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Pomona College with a B.A. in mathematics. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University and holds the honorary degrees Doctor of Science from Pomona College, Doctor of Laws from The College of Wooster, and Doctor of Humane Letters from Centre College. He currently serves on the Alumni Council of Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Claremont University Consortium.
