Bethany Zecher Sutton brings to Academic Search a passion for identifying and cultivating the next generation of leaders in American higher education, as well as broad knowledge of the landscape of colleges and universities and the leadership roles within them. She has facilitated searches at a diverse range of institutions for roles at multiple levels, including provost, vice provost, associate vice president, dean, executive director, and associate dean. Her work as a leadership coach and as a faculty fellow with the HERS Leadership Institute has sparked a particular interest in supporting leadership development for women in the academy and her former role as a chief of staff provides a grounding for all of the critical elements of the search process and collaboration with the institutional partner.
Ms. Sutton joined Academic Search following 17 years of service to higher education as a member of the leadership team at the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U). At AAC&U, Ms. Sutton played a central role in the association’s agenda to advance quality and equity in undergraduate education, working with colleagues from across the entire higher education community. She also served as secretary to the board and staffed several leadership groups, bringing her in contact with hundreds of senior leaders from all types of institutions. Prior to her position at AAC&U, she worked in the provost’s office at the University of Pennsylvania, where her role included serving as the staff liaison for search committees seeking to fill senior-level positions. Ms. Sutton holds a graduate certificate in leadership coaching from Georgetown University; an MA in history from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; and a BA in history from the University of Mary Washington.
