The Search is on for a Presidential Rhodes Replacement
PHILADELPHIA, PA, August 5, 2016 — Rhodes hopes to name a new college president by the start of the spring semester.
With the announcement of long-time Rhodes College president William E. Troutt retiring in June 2017, the school’s trustees appointed a presidential search committee, chaired by William J. Michaelcheck and Cary Fowler.
In June, the search committee retained Shelly Storbeck and Susan May of Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, a Pennsylvania-based executive search firm that specializes in higher education executive recruitment.
Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates will be in Memphis in August to meet with students, faculty, staff and administrators about the qualifications and characteristics they want to see in the next president.
“If all goes well, we’ll name a new president by December,” said J. Carey Thompson, dean of admission and vice president for enrollment and communications. “If things go normally, it will probably be January, and if negotiations drag on, we could be looking at March.”
Troutt has served as president of Rhodes since 1999 and was the president at Belmont University in Nashville prior to coming to Memphis.
Troutt’s legacy will be in developing better partnerships in the community with companies and entities such as FedEx Corp., the Memphis Zoo and the City of Memphis.
“That is something he has worked very hard on throughout his time at Rhodes,” Thompson said.
Thompson hopes the next president will serve similarly to Troutt, setting cultural implications rather than micromanaging operations.
“Dr. Troutt doesn’t get into the weeds of how we run the admissions office, but he sets a cultural and philosophical expectation as to how we are going to work together and treat each other,” Thompson said.
The search committee released an online survey so others can weigh in on the presidential search.
