Ryan Search Strengthens Leadership Development Offering

April 13, 2016 – Executive recruiter Ryan Search & Consulting has added Ken Smithmier as a senior consultant to focus on strengthening its leadership talent development offering. The expansion allows the firm to offer a broader range of services to its client base.

With a 40-year career in healthcare, the last 30 spent in senior leadership positions, Mr. Smithmier has led every size and type of hospital and provided industry association experience at both the state and national level. His work has included global consulting, building academic partnerships and the development and growth of manufacturing centers that produce radioactive isotopes used in nuclear medicine and PET studies. Most recently, he served as president and chief executive officer of Illinois Health and Science, the parent corporation of Decatur, Illinois-based Decatur Memorial Hospital and three other healthcare-related companies.

“Our research shows that firms are looking for help in the full range of talent development, talent acquisition and talent succession services,” said firm principal Dan Ryan. “Ken’s skills in talent development seemed a perfect match to help us select and hone just the right caliber of leaders for clients. And with the country continuing to gain more jobs while losing a number of key leaders due to retirement, we also believe there will be an increasing need for more well-rounded leaders, which, again, is where Ken and his expertise will greatly compliment what we do.”

Leadership development advisory services continue to be a growth area for executive search firms, and several recruiters have been taking steps to bolster their offerings in this area:

  • Former Egon Zehnder partner Rob Sloan recently launched Starboard Tack Partners, a strategic talent development and advisory services provider to boards, chief executives and executive teams in the financial services sector. Mr. Sloan said he decided to set out on his own to take advantage of the “major shift toward more diversified services” in the executive recruiting and leadership solutions sector. The talent continuum is very broad-based, said Mr. Sloan, and senior level recruiters now look at talent management from a more holistic perspective. This, he said, includes assessment, onboarding & integration, ongoing assessment, culture shaping, and career planning right up through to leadership development and succession planning;
