Physician-Focused Recruiter Acquired for $4 Million

October 9, 2015 – AMN Healthcare Services, a provider of healthcare workforce solutions and staffing services, has acquired Southlake, TX-based MillicanSolutions, a physician and executive leadership search firm focused on serving academic medical centers and children’s hospitals nationwide. The acquisition includes cash payments totaling $4 million.

This deal comes on the heels of recent M&A activity, including Options Group acquiring Whitney Correlate’s business, Heidrick & Struggles acquiring Co Company and Korn Ferry entering into a definitive agreement to acquire Hay Group.

Wesley D. Millican founded his firm in 2001 and he currently serves as its president. Mr. Millican is also founder and CEO of CareerPhysician Advisors L.P., providers of comprehensive career and business education resources to residents, fellows, and training program directors. He previously served as principal at Ray & Berndtson and before that was vice president at Physician Reliance Network, now U.S. Oncology. He also served as director of physician services and cultural development at Baylor Health Care System of Dallas and VP / marketing director at Horizon Group, a healthcare recruitment and consulting firm.

Recognized as an authority on physician leadership development in pediatrics, Mr. Millican devotes significant time to strategic planning, physician conflict resolution, and leading complex academic search initiatives for children’s organizations nationally.

“In addition to complementing our industry-leading Merritt Hawkins physician and healthcare executive search brand, MillicanSolutions brings further expertise and experience that will enable our clients to attract the executives and physician leaders needed as part of healthcare’s evolving trends,” said Susan Salka, president and chief executive officer of AMN Healthcare. “We are very excited to have founder, Wesley Millican, and the entire MillicanSolutions team joining the AMN family.”

That team includes two other search consultants: Jennifer L. Schaulin and Marcel Barbey, both who served as vice presidents.

Ms. Schaulin has spent over 11 years in executive search and was formerly a director with A.T. Kearney Executive Search and a principal with Ray & Berndtson in its consumer products and services practices. She has been responsible for executing search assignments for senior level executives across a broad range of functions in consumer products, medical products and technology companies.

Mr. Barbey has been recruiting physicians and providing healthcare staffing consultative services since 1999. His areas of expertise include medical staff needs analysis, contract negotiation, and establishing strong partnerships with physician candidates and clients. Previously, he was a principal with The Medicus Firm and prior to that he was with Merritt Hawkins & Associates where he trained and directed a team of search consultants that completed searches throughout the Midwest region.

MillicanSolutions clients include Uconn Health, John Hopkins Medicine & Children’s Center, Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Southern California, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, University of Utah School of Medicine, among others.

“We share a significant common passion with AMN Healthcare for leaving a legacy of dramatic improvement in the lives of patients and children through the effective recruitment and retention support of world-class physician and C-Suite leaders,” said Mr. Millican. “As a combined company, we can better respond to our healthcare clients’ specialized leadership needs, and attract even more physician and executive leadership talent from among the top national and international candidate pools.”

Ms. Salka said that as health systems accelerate their transformation into clinically integrated networks with changing care delivery models, “the role of the physician leader is becoming even more critical for success.”

Based in San Diego, AMN Healthcare is a leader and innovator in healthcare workforce solutions and staffing services to healthcare facilities across the nation. Its workforce solutions include managed services programs, vendor management systems, recruitment process outsourcing and consulting services.
