DHR Names Global Board & CEO Practice Leader

September 8, 2016 – Executive search firm DHR International has named Mike Magsig as managing partner and leader of the firm’s global board & CEO practice group. He replaces Jay Millen, who stepped down late last year; he now holds the same role at Caldwell Partners.

Mr. Magsig brings more than 16 years of executive search experience to DHR. During his career, he has focused on recruiting C-suite executives to transformational opportunities, succession planning, and in leveraging exceptional talent to new ventures. He has placed more than 300 C-level executives at companies including Swiss Re, Broadway Bank, Horace Mann Educators, CNO Financial and NCCI. He has recently placed members of the boards of directors at AIG, John Hancock Funds, and Assured Guaranty.

Prior to joining DHR, Mr. Magsig served as managing director at Korn Ferry where he was an active member of the firm’s board & CEO services practice and built the firm’s presence in this vertical. He also served as leader of the firm’s insurance practice, helping to expand it from from $14 million to $34 million in business.

A Critical Practice Group Leader

Before starting his career in executive search, Mr. Magsig worked in the insurance industry, serving as vice president of Lincoln National Corporation before going on to work as chairman, president, and CEO of The Cologne Life Reinsurance Company. During his tenure, he led Cologne Life, known today as Gen Re Life, to a six-fold profit increase while considerably growing shareholder value.

“We are thrilled to have Mike leading one of our most critical practice groups. His long tenured experience at the highest levels of executive recruiting, and focus on board and CEO recruitment, will be a huge asset to our firm as we extend DHR International’s capabilities,” said DHR CEO Geoff Hoffmann. “His strong focus on building trusted relationships and excellent search execution will prove to be a great assets to our clients.”

DHR’s board & CEO practice group has conducted board of director and CEO assignments for public and private companies across the breadth of industry sectors and market capital size. It combines well-seasoned executive search consultants — many who are members of influential boards — with industry thought leaders with expertise in the firm’s clients’ specific business models. Areas of specialty within the firm’s board & CEO practice include board competencies; board architecture (structure and composition); director compensation; CEO succession planning; corporate governance; executive and director effectiveness; and special committee requirements.

In recent months DHR has tapped CEOs for a diverse mix of organizations. Just recently, the firm recruited Gary Walrath as CEO of Chicago-based Turtle Wax. Managing partner Carlos F. Cata led the search along with partner Christine DeYoung. DHR also placed Guenter Butschek as managing director and CEO of Tata Motors. Frank Smeekes led the global assignment along with Amélie Bonneville, director talent acquisition (Europe), and Lorenz Pestinger, vice president of talent acquisition (Asia-Pacific).
